Hi everyone, how are you doing today? 😊

Crohn’s disease affects more than just the digestive system, it can also cause mouth ulcers and sores, which can be painful and difficult to manage. These ulcers are different from canker sores and cold sores, but they can be just as frustrating.

🔎 Why does Crohn’s disease cause mouth ulcers and sores?

  • Chronic inflammation can lead to swelling and sores in the mouth.
  • Nutritional deficiencies from a restricted diet can make you more susceptible.
  • Weakened immunity makes it harder for ulcers to heal.

🔎 How can you deal with mouth ulcers with Crohn’s disease?

🪥 Brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
🥗 Avoid spicy, salty, or acidic foods that may trigger irritation.
❌ Skip chewing gum, which can cause friction and discomfort.
🦷 Ask your doctor about antimicrobial mouth rinses or pain treatments.

Do you experience mouth ulcers with Crohn’s? What helps you manage them?

Mouth ulcers I’m afraid are part and parcel of Crohn’s and I have suffered from them for quite a number of years.

I also get thrush which affects my throat by restricting the food consumption. Many times I have been eating a meal and food gets stuck, which can at times be very frightening at times. If my wife is present she normally gives me a good whack between the shoulder blades. If she is not there and it happens I need to make myself vomit.

Mouth ulcers and thrush, I just grin and bare it.

I get mouth ulcers always. I’ve just had red sore patches in my mouth the last few days. My whole mouth is sore nearly all the time. I use chorhexadine mouth wash and bonjella . I clean my teeth at least twice a day as my mouth always feels awful. I go to the dentist regularly. I’ve had growths/ lumps on my tongue that I have had removed. I bite my cheeks regularly when eating leaving them scared, sore and bleeding. I’m sick of Crohns. I was diagnosed at 24 and I will be 70 this year. Crohns give me a break please.

I get ulcers at times and didn’t realise this could be part of crohnes. I always thought it could be because I have a couple of gaps in my teeth and I was biting my gums when eating
