Asthma can make your everyday life more difficult, especially if it is of a severe type, and it may be hard to do or to force yourself to do certain things, like exercise.

However, doing sport is very important for people with ashtma, as it helps strengthen the heart and the lungs, and stay in an overall good health.

What about you? Do you continue doing physical exercises despite your asthma? In what way do you think it helps you?

What kind of sport do you do and do you prefer outdoor or indoor activities?

Thank you in advance for your replies!

Hi, hope all is well with you at the moment as can be hun.  I have Asthma for the past 15 years and got it as an adult and I have had several chest infections, the one last year bringing on the Small Cell Lung Cancer diagnoses and I was thinking all along that it was a severe Asthma attack or Chest Infection.   Asthma is a horrible condition because of the breathing problems but sometimes we need to double check to make sure that it is Asthma and not a side effect of another condition hun.   I had a foot operation about 7 years ago and had a massive asthma attack but when they x-rayed me it was a clot near the lung that caused the asthma attack.   It is a condition that should be taken seriously but some medical personnel just don't do that.   Just pace yourself to suit yourself and let everyone else wait for you - don't put yourself through the agony of trying to keep up the pace with others, you will get there eventually - just give yourself time and relax as much as possible.  Do things little by little and it will get done eventually.  Good luck hun and take good care of yourself.  Georgy x

Listen to your body, you know when you are having a flair up and how severe it is. Pace yourself and don't overdo things on days you feel better. Take your medicines, do breathing exercises as told by professionals. Avoid triggers whatever they are when possible.

Can I ask you only need one Inhaler? Apologies if intruding but have been in your current position years ago. I always say to my G.P. and Consultants wish had such as present especially over recent years ago. Not just Spinhaler, terrible and useless.

I know what you mean about need to pace yourself and walking up hills whatever?

I have Ventolin as my Emergency avoid hospital back-Up. Also others including longer day lasting Steroid. Although the strength of dosages was doubled last year.

Also, have regular (Apart from the present because of the current virus) every 3. monthly Asthma nurse  Appointments.

Hello. Sophiesmum.                 Depending if your Asthma is under control? You are still entitled to see an Qualified Asthma nurse every 3. months. Including breathing tests ( I used to have until my Aortic aneurysm prevented breathing tests) Transferred to seeing excellent specialist) Now back seeing original Asthma nurse as more qualified and I don’t need keep reminding no breathing tests allowed. You are further entitled to best treatment you need? If asthma not under control you should get appointment with your G.P. especially as with Covid 19. Causing additional stress, in isolation mine is 12. Weeks. Yours? Likely be video to doctor but if you’re asthma difficulty not good can be off help for now! Hopefully. Good luck during this difficult time whether average isolation or extended?

Regarding humidity affecting Asthma conditions. I find my best time is always Winter since young. Before getting inhaler at 7. years old. A spinhaler, horrible.  When I was working is so long ago. Another lifetime. Lol I had to give up working indoors career when air conditioning affected asthma too much. Started working outside permanently as long possible.  Same hate being admitted to hospital for same reason just too hot. I am aware needs to be hot in hospital to kill germs. Perhaps time look at wards separated for different conditions. Such as asthma and other conditions?  Not a one suits all.

@Margarita_k as I've also been ill I'm only just getting started trying to up my activity levels. Only managed 10 minutes on treadmill, but it's a start as I know from experience it really does help with breathing and lung strength.

@Courtney_J Make sure you use your reliever inhaler before you start and choose something gentle but effective like swimming, which is the safest exercise for folk with asthma, yoga or Pilates. Always consult your primary care physician (or GP) before you start.

I used to be quite active before and was into basketball, football and running in general but in the years since I've been diagnosed I've had to cut back quite a bit. I still have issues climbing the stairs so I mostly do brisk walking nowadays. I've never tried swimming because I was worried that the chlorine would irritate my breathing but if it's recommended for asthmatics I may have to look into it.
