Hello,

So as the title says, are you the first one in your family to be diagnosed with asthma? If you aren't, who else has asthma in your family?

I was the first person in my family to have asthma as far as I know. My mum though had a history of hay-fever which they now think is linked to asthma. My 2 kids have inherited both asthma, my son, and the allergies, my daughter. I think there is a genetic link.

@JazzyC @Roo1978 Thank you both for sharing, it is always very interesting to discover the genetic links between illnesses.

I was the first member of my family to be diagnosed with Asthma.  Through research it was discovered that as a baby I had a bad  Bronchitis bout which the doctors  explained left me with a weak chest prone to asthma and in 1967 I developed this affliction and suffered ever since. I served in the military for nine years and subjected to  many stressful situations which was the trigger for the full onset of asthma.

On my Dad's side one uncle was asthmatic, he is still going strong  he will be 90 in August.

On my Mum's side one uncle was asthmatic, unfortunately he died young, not sure from what.

Myself and two of my brothers were asthmatic from very early childhood, I'm 66 and still have it with an overlap of COPD... My youngest brother died at 34 in a car accident the older of the two brothers died 51 from heart attack  I don't know if any of their children are asthmatic.

My youngest son has asthma my oldest son has eczema

One of my grandsons aged 6 is also asthmatic. Asthma has been hard at work totally through my family through the years.

Hello everyone,

How are you today? Have you seen this older discussion? emoticon cute

While the direct causes behind asthma are not fully understood, researchers have found that asthma can be caused by both hereditary and environmental factors.

What about you? Does asthma run in your family? Or were you the first to be diagnosed with it? Do you know what causes are behind your asthma?

@Courtney_J It unfortunately runs in my family. My mother and uncles on her side were all asthmatics. I'm not sure if it's been proven, but I remember reading somewhere many years ago that asthma runs through the maternal genes.
