Hello everyone,

Being in a romantic relationship can be nerve wracking and exciting experience, but especially so if you are suffering from Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease can make simple things like staying overnight in someone’s home, or going on a road trip, require a lot more planning and potentially an “awkward” conversation.

How did Crohn’s affect your relationships? Were you shy and nervous to discuss the different challenges that Crohn’s can present?

Please share to help other members :)

Hi!

I’ve found myself struggling alot with getting into relationships, but i find having crohn’s has helped relationships that i do have more meaningful, obviously having a disease which involves needing to go to the toilet frequently and such, there isn’t much you can’t say when it passes that

Hi

I was in a 12 year relationship the last 2 years of the relationship was when I got diagnosed with Crohn’s this was 2013 the relationship finished in 2015. In them final 2 years i had to give up my career as a chef because of the amount of hospital admissions. The steroids (Pred) I was on a high dose I noticed change in my personality, attitude my anger seemed to increase My sex drive dropped to 0 I didn’t find myself attractive anymore. The last thing I wanted to be doing with losing blood and diarrhoea I was just seeing a fat ugly blob when I looked in the mirror!! I’ve not been in a relationship since the thought of being in one does scare me now as I have a colostomy bag and a big hernia. It’s easy for people to say it’s inside that counts imo everything is about image nowadays. Mental health is another thing that I’m dealing with.

Mike

I agree that steroids can be terrible. Sorry it's been so hard for you, mate.

I think Crohn's is really hard on the spontaneity of relationships. In a couple we can't really just go on a surprise or random trip or just go an do something because we always need to be close to a bathroom for me if something happens. It's a bit of a damper on the "excitement" or romance.
