i had two hip replacements 20 and 19 years ago which are needing done again my shoulders neck pain most of the time having x-ray next week on that

Hi everyone, I am on the waiting list for a knee replacement can anyone give suggestions on what help I am entitled to after discharge from hospital please, as I live alone and have other health issues. ? Or any tips on how to manage ,its been adviced for me to sleep downstairs for the first two weeks to lessen risk of falls. But other wise it could be quite difficult for me to do basic tasks like carrying as I have arthritis in my feet and hands. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi Katie

The hospital should arrange after care before you are discharged. They will inform the District nurse to call on you and also your GP shoud be able to arrange that as well if you let him/her know when you are likely to be discharged. You will nee to go to the hospital once a week for physio. You can arrange the hosptal transport if you have no one to take you. It is important to carry on with the exercises advised by the physio at home. Take painkillers 20 minutes before doing the xercises. I don't know how old you are and what area you are in, as the service is different in each areas, but the physio will make you do the stairs before you are discharged, to see if you can manage them..

update on knee op, I am still waiting, my next appointment is 21st January with physio for talk about the op. until which I cannot have the op. By then it will be 9 months since referral,my knee is now worse with swelling and pain any suggestions other than RICE , bought a brace but thats no good as it just immobilises the knee making the other leg muscles weak.

Just thought I would do an update, My Operation was cancelled due to the virus. We are now looking to question why orthopeadics is still not back to giving services in many hospitals, only emergency . Hope anyone who is struggling like myself soon gets their services back. I have had to request a wheelchair from NHS due to the unforseen delays , out of all our controls. The months are clocking by and we have no solution for Coronavirus so we must find ways to run the services in as safe a way as we can. Hope everyone is coping.

@Smudger ,

you have my attention, the shoulder can be operated on given time .I have multi joint arthritis but accorrding to my doctor there is nothing wrong which makes life difficult. I am housebound till I get my op. I tried aqcupunture for my ankles some time ago but not cheap. One problem is many treatments are requred long term to be useful. I have hand joint , shoulder joint & knee joint exercises to do at home life long. Unfortunately no magic cure I am adviced that new machine on TV that you put your feet on is good to help balance and pain. begins with R . Costs around £200 on average. Enjoy your day and do try your best to keep mobile once you loose that it is down hill all the way.:)

Yes. Mobility is extremely important. Do not loose that. keep your exercises and walking going. I too have multi joints arthritis including spine. Due to the virus situation, Gym and swimming pools are closed and I really miss going, but have kept up with exercises at home and walking in the fields.

Thinking of you all during this time.

I have osteoarthritis in the left hand which appears to be getting worse as I get older. I'm a typist and on my laptop doing voluntary editing regularly. I now find I have to take breaks often due to the pain in my hand.

Being on Aspirin (blood thinner), I'm not allowed to take Co-Codamol due to Codeine, but find Paracetamol doesn't ease the pain. Think I'll soon be requesting x-rays to find out if there is any other damage.
