Asthma attacks are scary and highly debilitating. They leave sufferers feeling scare and exhausted.

My cousin had a terrible asthma attack before when we were on holidays. It happened in the water but luckily the inhaler was in my aunt's bag on the sand. I will never forget the fright.

My worst asthma attack was in November four years ago. I had a cold which was affecting my chest and my inhalers were not helping much..One night my breathing became so laboured I was sure I would die. Rushed to hospital by ambulance and given lots of drugs and oxygen. It turned out I had pneumonia on top of my asthma. When I came home a week later I had no energy at all..I was on prednisolone steroids for months ...It took a long time to feel more like myself and it knocked my confidence so much that I worried about leaving the house for months ....asthma more controlled nowadays I am glad to say.

I have had asthma all my life and it has never bothered me much until just latterly. I have kept it well under control until Christmas when I had a chest infection and ever since I have had breathing problems. Now been told it is my asthma causing the trouble and I have to use my inhalers more.

my worst asthma attack happened a few years ago I was in the hairdressers and could feel the tightness in my chest getting worse I travelled the 12 miles home and lay on the bed but sitting up, I was using my inhaler , salbutamol all day and wasn't getting any better........I was not getting any air hardly into my lungs and my husband drove me to  the hospital in the snow and ice ....I was very poorly by the time I got to the emergency department and was kept in hospital for a week ..............the consultant told me NEVER ever to drive to the hospital as I could have died before I got there.......always call ambulance........my asthma isn't that well controlled even now but I certainly won't take chances again

Over the years I have had a lot of serious asthma attacks but one of the worst was 3 years ago 4 days after my mum's funeral. I collapsed at home and I can remember my son having to take the dog out because he wouldn't let the paramedics take me out to the ambulance. Next thing I remember is waking up in the HDU with a hood mask over my head. They were feeding me the ventalin, oxygen and another asthma medicine straight into the mask, I was hooked up to machines and I don't know what else. It was terrifying to say the least. Hard to believe that was only 3 years ago when I think how much better my asthma is now

@JazzyC @suecroft @Sylvia @Roo1978 @moorea63 @Greggy Thank you all for sharing :)

What signs do you get when you are about to have an asthma attack? Is it always shortness of breath and tightness in your chest, or do other symptoms occur?
