There is a big difference between the sensation of feeling sad or down about something and depression. Depression can manifest itself in different ways and the symptoms following depression can differ from person to person. However, some of the most common signs of depression are:

Insomnia

Many people are unable to sleep, or have very restless sleep, when they are suffering from depression. This can make the feeling of depression even more pronounced as fatigue aggrevates feelings of despair.

Loss of Interest in Hobbies

It is common for people suffering from depression to suddenly lose interest in hobbies that they were once passionate about. A general lethargy surrounding participating in events or doing things that once would have interested the sufferer.

Weight Change

A fluctuation in weight is a common symptoms of depression; this can express itself in either weight gain or weight loss.

These are just three side effects of depression, many more exist which is what makes this disease so dispairing. If you feel depressed then don't hesitate to contact Samaritans to talk about how you feel, it is completely free: 116 123 Or you can email them at jo@samaritans.org

What symptoms do you, or a close one, suffer from concerning depression? How do you help to manage them?

Thank you for the tips above.

I am sure these will help many people suffering with depression... Its only by sharing one's views with others that we are able to find solutions!

Thankyou for including me. Im gratefull. Iam going through the worst depression ive ever experienced. I have isolated myself. As i cannot cope with all that has been said by anyone. Im sure i have had another breakdown. Its so sad nervous disorder is the hardest thing to live with. The samaritans are like your site a blessing.its truly exhausting. I think it reminds me of being uncontrollably sick. Its a lonely place. I hope everyone on this site feels a bit better every day thankyou.

Ursular

I found reading your article very sad in that you have felt so lonely? Depression can be a very lonely place unless you find it in yourself to share with others in the 'same boat'. I suffered with depression back in the 1970's when my marriage ended, I thought that my life was over and that I was alone. Not once did I seek help. After about 5 years I was in a shop one day and an old man I met in the shop queue said to me very quietly, 'You are not alone son' and he smiled and winked. I said 'What do you know about what I am going through?'. I can see it in your face, the 'lonely look'. We got chatting and it soon came out that he too was lonely and depressed because he had lost his wife after 55 years of marriage to ill health. 'So you see son, I know how you feel'. Talking to that old man made me realise that I was NOT ALONE that there were millions of people in the 'same boat' to varying degree's.

I think Ursular. What I'm trying to say is 'Don't keep it bottled up' talk to someone about how you feel, 'get it off you chest'. Talk to someone who are probably going through the same thing. Like someone said previously 'a problem shared..........' There's a lot of truth in that you know.

'My door' as they say is always open to you whenever you have that need?

Good Luck.                                                                                                                                                                                                    Richard emoticon smile-big
