I quit smoking a year ago, it was really challenging and I still have cravings all time. So my simple pleasure in life is gone and I still have my COPD. Is that possible? I still have to use my inhaler. I thought stopping would help more. What have others experienced?

Congratulations on stopping smoking, it is so hard to do. I never smoked but my husband did. He tried to give up for my sake and eventually managed to. My coughing improved fairly quickly, but it took ages before my lung function improved. It takes a long time for the inflammation to abate. I don't think it ever goes away completely. I probably have too much scar tissue. With my inhaler and avoiding triggers my life is much improved.

My advice is stick with it. It is baby steps to make progress.

Well the interesting situation wife my wife and her COPD/smoking battle. Short quiting has lead to improvements and reduction of her smokers cough. Then on occasion of extreme stress her returning to heavy smoking is quite striking in her breathing. Just like living with an alcoholic they all lie and try to say its not happening but when you live and breath with a person you know despite the claims otherwise. We are back the GP route for support, which has been greatly reduced, for some help and another electronic gizmo she so hates. But reality at 68 she will be smoking to her her grave but hopefully reduced rate so the suicide will be a little slower. For me, I gave up cold turkey 20 years ago and always regretted it, soon as they pin me down with whatever terminal, I will be straight down the shop for a pack of twenty, if I can still afford them.

Well done for quitting smoking as myself is an ex smoker and I know just how hard and challenging giving up can be, I have copd, with copd when you give up smoking it will arrest the progression of the disease but unfortunately your lungs won’t recover from the damage caused, excersizing can help along with medications prescribed by a gp.

Hi ,

I have COPD and I had quit smoking for a while but I felt terrible, so I invested in healthy filters with filtration and continue to smoke. I am not saying its going to help everyone but I find it beneficial ,and I feel better.
