Hi All After a bout of flu and cough which has persisted for weeks after I have been referred for a spirometry test. I did another breath test last week which showed inflammation of the airways. An x ray last September showed all clear but did indicate hyper expanded lungs (never flagged up by doctor) which makes me think it is COPD. I am 73 and in reasonably good shape for my age. I have not smoked in more than 40 years and exercise on a regular basis. It had never occurred to me that I might have COPD.

If it is COPD it must be mild as I haven't really noticed symptoms until the possibility was mentioned now I am thinking I have a lot of symptoms.

I am absolutely devastated and worried about the impact on my life if it is COPD or any other lung condition. I have a few questions - would high humidity and heat affect COPD negatively? I am hoping to go to South India later this year and it will be hot and humid even though it is the coolest time of year. I know that many people will be struggling to get through the day so travelling would not be high on list of priorities but it is important to me and I would like to make one last trip to India.

Exercise - I go to exercise classes (age appropriate!) and go Nordic Walking. Is it OK to continue doing this?

At the moment I have been given a steroid nasal spray as previously the doctor thought it was post nasal drip causing the problem. It seems to be helping but I am not keen to take it for long periods.

Has anyone tried alternative treatments and acupuncture?

Any info would be helpful as I am at a loss. Thanks. Apologies for long post.

Hi @whattodo, how are you holding up today? 💙

Thank you so much for sharing your story so honestly. It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed right now. Being faced with the possibility of a diagnosis like COPD, especially when you’ve led an active and healthy lifestyle, can come as a real shock. You're not alone in this, and your experience will surely hit home with many in the community who’ve been in a similar place.

You’ve raised some really important questions, especially around travel, exercise, and alternative treatments. It’s wonderful that you’re still staying active with things like Nordic walking and age-appropriate exercise classes, that's incredibly valuable for both physical and emotional well-being, even with a respiratory condition.

Let me tag a few members who may be able to share their own experiences and insight:

❓ How did you first cope emotionally when COPD (or another lung condition) was first suspected or diagnosed?

❓ Have you noticed whether travel, especially to warm, humid climates, affects your breathing?

❓ Are there safe ways to continue exercising with COPD, especially for those who were active before diagnosis?

Let’s come together and help support @whattodo with personal stories, tips, or even just a kind word. Every voice counts. 💬

Looking forward to hearing from you all,

@Somya.P hot weather is a no no as is cold and windy, when I first got diagnosed it hit me hard, but as with everything you just have to adjust as well as you can, keep exercising within your capabilities, and try to avoid crowded places where you may pick up some harmless to most people but not us germs.
