Hello,

It is true that it isn't just smokers who can contract COPD. However, did you smoke before developing COPD? Did you stop smoking immediately or do you still smoke?

@JosephineO As soon as I was diagnosed with COPD I stopped smoking with the help of my GP's practice nurse and patches. My husband and I both smoked for about 50 years plus we had smokey coal and wood fires.  We started smoking when we were teenagers in the 1960s,  He died of it and I'm suffering for it now as I can't walk far and can't talk and breathe at the same time. You live and learn!

According to the latest research I have come across they reckon 1 in 5 of all people now being diagnosed with COPD have never smoked. This rather puts paid to the Dr who told me that as I have never smoked I couldn't have COPD.

I used to smoke but I actually quit some time before the diagnosis. Bad luck I guess. Does anyone else get really bad flareups from smoke in the air?

In answer to Peters on yes I get bad flare ups if I go anywhere smoky. My daughter smokes but not indoors but I still find my chest tightens as soon as I walk in her cottage. If I pass a heavy smoker in the street that can be enough.
