A breast cancer survivor : “Telling friends and family was really hard. Since my mother had died from breast cancer it felt like I was saying, ‘Here we go again.’ My sister-in-law had died from lung cancer the same month I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This made it hard to tell my husband’s family that cancer had struck again. I was sad for my husband.”

Only you know when and how to tell your loved ones about your diagnosis. It may be hard and it may cause a wide range of emotions for them as well as for you, but sharing with your family and friends will let you have the support you need.

How did you tell your family about your diagnosis, under what circumstances? What was their reaction? Share your stories with us.

When I found out I had cancer I told my husband right away because I couldn't take it on my own. But I didn't tell my children because I didn't want them to be afraid for me and to worry about me. I only told them after the surgery, when everything was going well.

I think it's really hard for our families to bear this at our side.

The only people I told about my diagnosis, were my husband and my then boss. I was actually diagnosed in 2011,to this day I haven't told my family, my parents are elderly and would only worry and I didn't figure it was anyone else's business but mine! It's not a decision I've ever regretted, I think the decision to tell people or not is a personal one, there is no right or wrong.

Hello everyone,

How are you today? Have you seen this older discussion? emoticon cute

Sharing your diagnosis with friends and family can be hard... People often don't know what to say or are overwhelmed by emotions or fears. Deciding who you tell and when is very personal, so it's important to do it on your own terms.

Who did you tell about your diagnosis and when did you do it? How did the conversation go? How did they react? Do you regret informing them or was it relieving to you?

Feel free to share your stories and thoughts with us here!

Take care,

I told my girls straight away because I didn't want them to worry - they know it's in the family so while they were upset they weren't shocked. We've known it was coming. My husband of course I told right away too. I haven't told most other people because I don't really feel the need.
