Hi all

Have been reading a couple of articles about the link between copd and gastric reflux. Apparently 78% of people with copd also have gastric reflux, myself included. Also the reflux can trigger an exacerbation? Anyone else noticed that their breathing is affected when they have indigestion?

@alee1725 Hello alee1725, thank you for opening this discussion. This is an interesting topic, I wasn't aware of the link between COPD and acid reflux! Let me tag some members to see what they think about this.

Hello all, how are you today? Are you aware of the link between COPD and acid reflux? Do you yourself also have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD or acid reflux)? If so, have you noticed its impact on your COPD? What do you think?

@alee1725 This is interesting, I didn't know this. I must fall into that 22% that doesn't have it!

I had gastric reflux for years, taking Setlers, Rennies etc like smarties. Mentioned it to the doctor every time I had a check up, no treatment offered. Started complaining of breathlessness, again no investigation, until I started coughing up tiny spots of fresh blood. I think the acid reflux was the main cause of my COPD, through breathing in the acid during the night, When the burning in my throat would waken me. I have never smoked.

I didn't realise that there was a link but I do suffer an awful lot with acid reflux....... Costs nearly £12 a week to use esomeprazol (guardium) bought over the counter   I mentioned it to my copd nurse on the last check up  but she did't mention that they were linked in any way.. She did say that she would have a talk with the doc about omeprazole but although my inhalers were delivered there was no prescription for it.

Update.... My doctor sent a prescription for Omeprazole to my local chemist who delivered a pack. Hopefully if I can get this acid reflux under control it will lead to less COPD flare ups

I believe the acid reflux I had contributed to my COPD. I have never smoked! I was eventually put on Losec ( omeprazole does not work well for me) I was on that for 18 years. Then a Professor told me to stop taking it. It was causing inflammation throughout my body and I was not absorbing nutrients from my food. I was particularly low on magnesium.

Coming off Losec was hell. I almost gave up. However two years on  I have it fairly under control. I was told magnets round the oesophagus would be the best solution for me, but at 78 my NHS is not prepared to do that.

Iv suffered  with acid reflux for years. Lately it has got worse and did not know that my copd was associated with it. At night it's  like my throat an stomach are on fire an it has even made me sick. Will talk to my dr about it.
