Hi Damien,
It’s completely understandable to feel unsure about what to do when someone close to you is newly diagnosed with MS. 💜 You don’t have to have all the answers or know exactly when to step in. Sometimes being a friend in the usual way, while also being patient when fatigue or symptoms change her plans, can be one of the most supportive things you can do.
I think it can also help to let her decide what kind of support she wants on a particular day rather than assuming she always needs help. A simple “I’m here if you need me” can leave the door open without putting pressure on her.
For anyone living with MS, what would you tell someone who is learning how to support a friend with MS? Are there things you wish the people around you had done differently, or small gestures that made you feel understood?

It would be wonderful to hear your experiences and advice — they may give this friend some reassurance about how to be there without making her feel defined by her diagnosis.
Take care,
Razar. M 😊

A close friend of mine has recently been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and I’m honestly not really sure how to support her.
I want to be there for her, but at the same time I don’t want to keep asking if she’s okay or make her feel like I only see her as someone who is sick.
Some days she seems completely fine and other days she’s really tired and doesn’t feel like doing much. I find it hard to know when I should offer help and when I should just let her be.
If you have MS, what do you wish your friends had understood when you were first diagnosed? And is there anything your friends or family did that really helped you?
